The first thing you want to do is look for a big healthy tree nearby to use as an anchor point.
2
Put you winch's clutch in free spool. Grab the hook and pull the cable out far enough to reach your anchor point. Put a tree protector strap around the bottom of the tree trunk near the base and attach with a D-shackle. Place the recovery winch cable hook on the D-shackle
3
Place the recovery winch in forward position. Start to reel in the cable to take the slack out. Place a cable weight damper, jacket, or sock with tennis balls in it around the recovery winch cable to protect you if the cable was to break.
4
Get in the vehicle. Put it in gear. Use the recovery winch to start getting you moving then use slight throttle to help the recovery winch out.
5
If you are really stuck! You will need to use a snatch block on the D-shackle and run the recovery winch cable back to your vehicle. This is called a double line pull which gives you twice the pulling power, which equals less strain on the winch.
